A bombing by Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Saturday targeted the maternity ward of Saudi Hospital in El Fasher, North Darfur, killing at least 70 people and injuring dozens. The hospital, a critical facility for obstetrics, paediatrics, and surgery, was destroyed, leaving the city without its only fully operational health service.
The attack follows repeated shelling of the hospital, with Darfur’s governor, Minni Arko Minawi, calling it “an extermination” and citing the force’s targeting of civilians. An RSF advisor resigned over the violence, claiming the group was “deviating” from its principles.
International reactions included calls from WHO, Gulf Cooperation Council, and Qatar for accountability and protection of health workers. The incident highlights the deteriorating humanitarian crisis in Darfur, with similar attacks severely disrupting healthcare services and putting lives at risk.
The bombing underscores the ongoing violence in the region and the urgent need for peace and justice as communities suffer.
