A devastating fire at a ski resort in northwestern Turkey has claimed at least 76 lives and injured 51 people, according to reports. The blaze broke out at the 12-story Grand Kartal Hotel in Bolu province’s Köroğlu Mountains area early on Tuesday.
Eyewitnesses described a horrific scene of people jumping from windows as flames engulfed the hotel. Several guests reported trying to escape through windows, with some managing to jump to safety while others were trapped inside.
The cause of the fire is currently unknown, but authorities believe it started in the restaurant section and spread quickly due to the hotel’s remote location and frigid weather conditions.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has announced a national day of mourning for Wednesday, and four people, including the hotel owner, have been arrested in connection with the tragedy. Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç vowed that those responsible will be held accountable, promising to conduct the investigation “with great care and sensitivity.”
