Around 90,000 people joined the “March for Humanity” in Sydney on Sunday, calling for increased humanitarian aid to Gaza. The protest was initially blocked by police due to concerns about crowd safety, but a state Supreme Court ruling allowed it to proceed, citing the urgency of the humanitarian crisis.
Police had estimated around 90,000 participants, with many carrying symbols of hunger faced by Gazans, such as pots and pans. However, the march’s route was altered due to safety concerns, and police later ordered protesters to stop.
Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar condemned the march as a “distorted alliance between the radical Left and fundamentalist Islam,” while opposition leader Yair Lapid described it as supporting groups that promote violence against LGBTQ individuals and women.
The march comes amid diplomatic pressure on Israel, with France and Canada announcing recognition of a Palestinian state. Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has expressed support for a two-state solution, but not recognized Palestine. The court ruling allowing the protest also meant protesters would be immune from charges related to obstructing traffic.
