US Reports First Severe Bird Flu Case in Human History

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed the first severe human case of bird flu, a H5n1 avian influenza infection. A person over 65 with underlying medical problems is being treated in critical condition after exposure to sick and dead birds in a backyard flock. This marks the first reported severe illness caused by bird flu in the US.

While there have been more than 60 reported cases of bird flu infections in people, most have been mild and among farmworkers exposed to poultry or dairy cows. However, two cases, one in Missouri and another in California, remain unexplained.

The CDC emphasizes that bird flu is still mainly an animal health issue, with low public risk. There has been no documented spread of the virus from person to person. The organization is monitoring a sporadic case reported in other countries in 2024 and previous years.

In response to the outbreak, California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency due to detected cases on Southern California farms. Raw milk from infected cattle was recalled after the virus was found in samples sold in stores. Los Angeles County health officials have also confirmed two cat deaths linked to bird flu infections after drinking contaminated raw milk.

Experts advise people who come into contact with sick or dead birds to take precautions, including wearing protective gear and gloves when handling poultry.
