Generative AI to Transform Majority of ICT Jobs

Generative AI is transforming many jobs and industries. According to the AI-Enabled ICT Workforce Consortium, more than 92% of information and communication technology (ICT) jobs will be highly or moderately transformed by AI.

The consortium analyzed 47 specific ICT job roles across seven “job families.” They found that business and management, design and user experience, and testing and quality assurance will see the biggest transformations. AI can automate routine tasks, streamline workflows, and create “hyper personalization.”

Workers will need new skills in machine learning (ML), prompt engineering, data science, and natural language processing (NLP). Skills like basic data analysis, manual data cleaning, and task scheduling will become less relevant.

The consortium emphasized the importance of workers acquiring skills in AI-driven competitive analysis, AI integration strategies, ML literacy, and NLP. They also highlighted the need for workers to understand product development lifecycles, agile methodologies, process improvement, predictive analytics, and data management.

To prepare for this shift, individuals should proactively seek reskilling and upskilling opportunities through employer programs, labor-sponsored training, or online courses. Employers must invest in AI training to promote competitiveness and innovation.

The consortium will explore public-private partnerships to contribute to an “AI skills taxonomy” that defines and maps skills to roles and required levels of proficiency. They also plan to introduce an AI Workforce Playbook to help enterprises proactively reskill and upskill workforces.

The AI-Enabled ICT Workforce Consortium urges workers, employers, and institutions to take quick action to prepare for the impact of generative AI on the workforce.
