Apple and Meta are locked in a battle over the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), which aims to ensure interoperability between tech giants and their rivals. The DMA requires designated gatekeepers, including Apple and Meta, not to restrict access to core platform services.
The dispute centers around iOS, with Apple expressing concerns that the DMA could compromise user privacy and security. However, in a surprising move, Apple is now targeting Meta specifically, claiming it has made more interoperability requests than any other company.
Meta has pushed back, accusing Apple of fabricating privacy excuses to block access. If granted, Meta’s requests could allow the company to access users’ messages, emails, phone calls, apps used, photos, files, and passwords.
The EU is actively considering how to apply the DMA interoperability requirements to Apple, raising concerns about the impact on user privacy and security.
