Unlocking ChatGPT on iPhone: A Comprehensive Guide

Apple has integrated ChatGPT into its iPhone ecosystem, enhancing AI capabilities across various apps. In iOS 18.2, users can leverage ChatGPT for complex queries using Siri, Writing Tools, and Visual Intelligence.

To set up ChatGPT, open Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > Extensions > ChatGPT. Toggle on the switch next to Use ChatGPT and sign in with a free or paid account if desired. This integration allows users to ask complex questions, generate images, and access Writing Tools’ Compose option without an account.

When using ChatGPT, only request and attachments are sent to OpenAI, ensuring data protection. Users can control whether Siri asks permission before sending information to ChatGPT by toggling the Confirm ChatGPT Requests switch.

The integration with Writing Tools generates text based on files or images uploaded from the iPhone. Visual Intelligence uses the Camera app to identify objects and places using the ChatGPT feature.

Future integrations, such as Google’s Gemini, are reported but not officially announced. Apple software chief Craig Federighi expressed interest in integrating Gemini at some point.

Note that an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 16 model is required for these features, and the iOS 18 update unlocks them.
