A drone attack by Ukraine on a key oil refinery in southern Russia’s Rostov region sparked a fire early Thursday morning, regional authorities said. The attack involved “more than three dozen” unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and three missiles launched at several cities and towns in the area.
Air defense systems neutralized most of the air targets, extinguishing the fire at the Novoshakhtinsk oil refinery by 6:45 a.m., according to acting Rostov region Governor Yuri Slyusar. However, one person was wounded in a village near the city due to falling drone fragments.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said it thwarted Kyiv’s attempts to carry out terrorist attacks using aircraft-type UAVs, destroying over 80 drones across the country, including 36 over the Rostov region. The ministry made no mention of the Ukrainian missile strikes.
This incident marks one of several recent attacks on Russia’s border regions, with two separate incidents targeting the city of Rostov and western Bryansk region last week, resulting in a fire at an oil depot and damaging an industrial facility.
