The US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) has issued a new recommendation statement on the use of vitamin D supplementation for preventing fractures and falls in older adults. The task force reviewed 20 randomized controlled trials, which found no significant benefit from taking vitamin D or calcium supplements.
The trials included postmenopausal women and men aged 50 years or older, and analyzed data from over 1,000 participants. The results showed that supplementation with vitamin D and/or calcium did not reduce the risk of hip fractures or falls.
According to the USPSTF, the available evidence does not support the use of vitamin D supplementation for fracture or fall prevention in community-dwelling postmenopausal women and men aged 60 years or older. The task force’s recommendation is based on a “D” level of evidence, which indicates that the benefit is uncertain.
The draft recommendation statement has been posted online, along with an evidence review, and will be open for public comment until January 21, 2025.
