Apple’s AI Platform Falsely Reports Murder Case, Calls for Action

Apple’s AI-powered intelligence platform has been found to be prone to hallucinations, misinterpreting user notifications and spouting false information. The feature, introduced with iOS 18.1 and improved in iOS 18.2, summarizes all notifications on a single stack, but users have reported instances of incorrect information.

One notable incident involved Luigi Mangione, who was falsely told by the platform that he had shot himself in prison while awaiting trial for murdering healthcare insurance CEO Brian Thompson. In reality, Mangione had not committed suicide.

Reporters Without Borders has criticized Apple’s use of notifications summaries, calling it “a blow to the outlet’s credibility and a danger to the public’s right to reliable information.” The organization is urging Apple to remove the feature until its AI platform can produce more accurate results.

The incident highlights concerns about the reliability of generative AI services, which are still in their early stages. As Apple continues to improve its algorithm, it may consider temporarily suspending the notifications summary feature to prevent further misinformation from spreading.
