A recent Australian study has found a connection between a healthy diet and reduced chronic pain, particularly among women. Researchers analyzed data from 654 Australians who were surveyed about their health, fitness, and eating habits. Despite having high levels of body fat, participants who followed the Australian Dietary Guideline – emphasizing consumption of vegetables, fruits, lean meat, fish, legumes/beans, and low-fat dairy products – had lower pain levels.
According to lead researcher Sue Ward, PhD, the anti-inflammatory properties of healthy food appear to reduce pain. The study found that women with better diets had lower pain levels and improved physical function, while this association was weaker for men. The researchers suggest that recognizing dietary intake as a relevant aspect in assessing and managing pain is important, particularly for those who may struggle with weight loss due to their health conditions.
The findings add to the growing body of evidence suggesting that high-fat Western diets can exacerbate chronic pain, while high-fiber diets promote healthy bacteria growth and reduce joint pain. The study’s results highlight the potential benefits of adopting a healthier diet for individuals struggling with chronic pain, regardless of their weight status.
