Starbucks workers in Seattle, Los Angeles, and Chicago are going on strike for five days, starting Friday, as negotiations with the company stall. The union, Starbucks Workers United, aims to pressure the company into offering wage increases and resolving unfair labor practice charges.
The workers claim that Starbucks is not negotiating in good faith and is not offering meaningful raises. However, Starbucks counters that the union’s demands are “not sustainable.”
Despite the disputes, both parties have reached agreements on several topics during previous bargaining sessions. The negotiations broke down due to disagreements over contract proposals.
Starbucks has committed to reaching a framework agreement by the end of the year, but the strike will ultimately spread to hundreds of stores across the country by Christmas Eve if workers’ demands are not met.
The workers are hoping that the strike will send a message to Starbucks that their treatment is unacceptable. They plan to spend 24 hours straight on the picket line, raising money for their relief fund and spreading awareness about their cause.
