The European Union has released a document outlining its demands for Apple to make iOS more interoperable with other platforms, including Android. The EU wants Apple to open up native features of iOS, such as AirDrop and AirPlay, to allow them to work seamlessly with non-Apple devices.
According to the document, the EU requires Apple to provide a protocol specification that allows third-party apps to access and control AirDrop on an Android device. This would enable users to send and receive files between their iPhone and Android devices using AirDrop.
The EU also wants Apple to make AirPlay available to other platforms, allowing users to connect non-Apple devices to their TV or speaker using the feature. However, Apple has responded to this mandate by criticizing the EU for its stance on privacy concerns.
In its response, Apple argued that opening up AirPlay to Meta would create new security and privacy issues, while giving them access to user data about their homes. The EU is currently consulting with Apple on this matter until January 9, 2025, and if Apple doesn’t comply, it could face heavy fines.
The European Commission’s demands come as part of its efforts to ensure “effective interoperability” between different platforms, allowing users to share files and access services across devices.
