Dooby Shop Invests in Mixed-Use Project Near Beatties Ford Road

The Dooby Shop, a West End business with several cosmetology schools, has purchased a former barbershop near Beatties Ford Road for $300,000. The company plans to create a mixed-use project that combines education, health, and entrepreneurship.

The 0.14-acre property was once home to Tom’s Barber Shop, a landmark for Black men seeking hair care in west Charlotte. Founder Terese Swan Hutchinson sees this project as an opportunity to honor the legacy of Tom’s Barber Shop while investing in her community.

Hutchinson is also the founder of Skill Builders Institute, a nonprofit that provides resources and financial assistance to people pursuing careers in beauty and barbering. The Dooby Shop’s purchase is part of a trend of Black-owned investments in the Beatties Ford Road corridor, which has historically been a hub for Black businesses.

Valarie R Brooks Real Estate represented both the buyer and seller. The sale marks an exciting new chapter for Tom’s Barber Shop, which was known as a beacon of tradition and connection for generations of Black men in Charlotte.
