MrBeast’s Beast Games Fails as Spectacle Over Substance

The new Prime Video series Beast Games makes it clear that Jimmy “MrBeast” Donaldson’s online success is due more to spectacle than substance. Despite the show’s grand prize of $5 million, the experience feels wearisome and shallow, relying on constant reminders that what you’re watching is “wild.” The formula involves frying attention spans with loud escalations, a trend carried over from MrBeast’s YouTube channel.

The show’s lack of investment in its contestants’ personalities and motivations makes it feel impatiently frenetic, moving quickly between challenges without building any tension. Even when the challenges themselves are potentially fun, they’re edited to pieces that fail to deliver an impact. The biggest problem lies with the creator himself, MrBeast, who comes across as a hype man for his brand rather than a genuine entertainer.

The show’s partnership with MoneyLion adds another layer of concern, as it promotes a predatory enterprise through QR code giveaways and ad reads. Beast Games is more of a disposable distraction than a serious reality competition, and its seven remaining episodes will likely fail to engage viewers who crave something more substantial.
