Oakland Zoo Prepares for Bird Flu Outbreak Amid State Emergency Declaration

California’s bird flu outbreak is spreading rapidly across the state’s dairy farms, infecting herds and causing illness nationwide. Now, zoos like the Oakland Zoo are taking precautions to protect not only visitors but also wildlife and endangered species.

The zoo has put its preparedness plan into action, with biosecurity measures in place to minimize exposure to wild birds. “We test all our own birds regularly if they’re sick,” said Alex Herman, Vice President of Veterinary Services at the Oakland Zoo. The zoo has vaccinated its five California Condors, a critically endangered species, and is now providing vaccines to other sites in need.

The Oakland Zoo is working closely with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the USDA, International Bird Rescue, and others to share information on the outbreak. Herman noted that while the zoo takes precautions seriously, it remains a safe place for visitors. “We have a full-service veterinary hospital where any sick animal is treated right away,” he said.

As the bird flu outbreak continues to spread, the Oakland Zoo’s efforts aim to protect not only its animals but also the public and the environment.
