Iowa Reports First Confirmed Human Case of Bird Flu

The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services has confirmed its first human case of bird flu in the state. The individual was exposed to poultry with the virus while working on a commercial flock in northwest Iowa, but is recovering after receiving treatment for mild symptoms.

Iowa has been monitoring avian influenza closely since 2022 and is prepared to mitigate its impact on the community. With over 60 reported human cases across nine states in December, most linked to poultry and dairy cows, the risk of transmission through direct contact with infected animals remains a concern.

The HHS notes that the virus can be spread through prolonged exposure to infected flocks and herds, often through the eyes, nose, or mouth. Those with direct contact to poultry and dairy cows who experience flu-like symptoms or eye infections are advised to consult their doctor.

There is no evidence of human-to-human transmission in the country, and safety concerns have been raised about eggs, poultry products, pasteurized milk, and dairy products. However, it is essential for individuals with direct exposure to infected animals to be vigilant and seek medical attention if symptoms arise.
