The Trump administration’s travel ban policy has left international students in the US on edge, prompting many colleges and universities to advise them to return to campus before President-elect Donald Trump is inaugurated.
Over 12 schools have issued advisories, citing concerns that Trump may impose new restrictions similar to those he implemented during his first term. Despite uncertainty about Trump’s plans, schools are urging international students to take precautions and plan ahead.
During his presidency, Trump banned travel to the US by citizens of seven predominantly Muslim countries, affecting over 40,000 people. The ban led to delays and detentions at airports, including for students and faculty.
International students now number over 1.1 million in the US, with those from India and China making up more than half of all international students. Some schools have advised students to return before January 20, when Trump will take office, while others have warned of possible delays at immigration control.
Trump’s transition team has not commented on whether he plans to revive the travel ban or expand it. However, in the past, he has vowed to “revoke the student visas of radical anti-American and anti-Semitic foreigners” if they protest on campus.
