Google has announced Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking, a multimodal reasoning model that tackles complex problems with speed and transparency. The new model is capable of stronger reasoning capabilities than its predecessor, released just eight days ago.
Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking supports up to 32,000 tokens of input and can produce 8,000 tokens per output response. It offers accessible and more transparent reasoning, allowing users to access step-by-step reasoning through a dropdown menu. This feature addresses longstanding concerns about AI functioning as a “black box.”
The model has shown promising results in early tests, correctly answering tricky questions within one to three seconds. Independent third-party analysis has also praised the model, naming it the number one performing model across all LLM categories.
Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking features native support for image uploads and analysis, expanding its potential use cases. However, it currently lacks integration with other Google apps and external tools. Developers can experiment with the model via Google AI Studio and Vertex AI.
The new model’s capabilities position it as a serious contender in the reasoning AI market, rivaling OpenAI’s o1 family and beyond. Its ability to handle diverse data types and offer visible reasoning makes it an attractive option for developers and users alike.
