US Life Expectancy Hits 78.4 Years Amid Decline in Overdose Deaths

The US life expectancy at birth has reached its highest level since the Covid-19 pandemic, thanks to a significant decrease in drug overdose deaths, according to recent reports. In 2023, the nation’s death rate fell by 6% compared to the previous year, resulting in an increase in life expectancy at birth from 77.5 years to 78.4 years. This decline in mortality is attributed to a 4% drop in overdose death rates, marking a ‘fundamental shift’ in the country’s health trends, according to researchers.
