The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has confirmed H5 avian flu in two cats that died after drinking recalled raw milk from Raw Farm. The cats exhibited appetite loss, fever, and neurologic signs, which initially tested positive for influenza A. Other pets in the household are under quarantine.
Investigations are ongoing into three other suspected cases involving cats from a different household. One cat tested positive for influenza A, while the others died from presumed influenza A. Officials are examining potential sources of the virus, including raw meat, to determine whether consumption led to severe illness in these cats.
In Wisconsin, health officials have shared more details about a recent human case, which is believed to be related to exposure to wild birds carrying the B3.13 virus genotype. The patient, a woman who worked on a farm, experienced mild flu symptoms and recovered after taking antiviral medication.
Louisiana’s state veterinarian confirmed a severe case of bird flu in an older adult with underlying medical conditions. The patient remains hospitalized and is in critical condition.
The US Department of Agriculture has confirmed additional outbreaks in dairy cattle, poultry, and commercial farms across 16 states. These cases highlight the risk of H5 avian flu transmission from birds to humans and animals through consumption of raw meat products or exposure to infected birds. Health officials urge residents and their pets to avoid raw milk and undercooked meat products, limit contact with sick and dead animals, report sick and dead birds, and keep pets and poultry away from wild birds.
