Lt Gen Igor Kirillov, head of Russia’s Radiation, Chemical, and Biological Protection Forces, was assassinated in a bomb attack in Moscow on December 17. Two things have become clear since his death: he was killed by the Ukrainian intelligence service, reportedly claiming him to be a “war criminal” and “legitimate target.” The Kremlin regards this truth as an irritation, refusing to acknowledge Ukraine’s involvement and instead blaming the British.
Kremlin mouthpieces, including State Duma deputy Andrey Gurulyov and former President Dmitry Medvedev, have claimed that the British did it, labeling them as “Anglo-Saxons” for their intelligence actions. They urge Russia to strike back at the West in response to Kirillov’s demise. However, this narrative is a classic example of Russia’s tendency to deflect responsibility and blame Western powers.
In reality, Ukraine has developed a sophisticated intelligence service capable of striking at the heart of Russia’s security system. The invasion has exposed vulnerabilities that were previously thought to be ironclad. Russia’s propagandists are now struggling to admit that their actions have consequences, and instead, they resort to concocting lies to maintain their narrative.
The real challenge for Russia is acknowledging its own weaknesses and taking responsibility for the losses suffered during the war. The invasion has exposed a flawed intelligence system, and it is time for Russia to confront this reality rather than blaming external powers.
