Gisèle Pelicot: French Woman Convicted After Years in Court

Gisèle Pelicot, 72, has finally found closure after a four-year court battle. The retired schoolteacher was convicted of drugging and raping her husband, Dominique, while she was unconscious, in addition to inviting at least 50 strangers into their home for similar incidents.

Pelicot’s lawyers say the relief she felt during the trial was overwhelming as all 51 men accused of sexually assaulting her were found guilty. However, they also acknowledged that no sentence can restore what she lost and that personal compensation will not bring solace.

The court sentenced Dominique to 20 years in prison, while others received sentences ranging from three to 15 years for their involvement. Pelicot’s lawyers praised the judge’s decision as “personalized” and aimed at acknowledging her victimhood.

Despite some criticism of the French government over the need for “consent” in rape law, no immediate action is expected. Lawyer Isabelle Steyer said she remains unconvinced that changing attitudes towards rape will be achieved through legislation alone.

Pelicot, who has become an icon for women worldwide, plans to spend Christmas with her family and may continue to campaign for better treatment of victims like herself.
