US Conducts Strikes on Houthi Targets in Yemen’s Capital

The US military has conducted air strikes against targets linked to the Houthi rebels in Yemen’s capital Sanaa. The strikes targeted a missile storage facility and a command-and-control site, aiming “to disrupt and degrade Houthi operations”. The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) said this after recent series of attacks between the Yemeni rebel group and the Israeli military.

Houthi officials have called the US strikes “terrorist attacks”, accusing the US of supporting Israel against the group. Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, a member of the Supreme Political Council, stated that the American actions do not stop support for Gaza, and the group will continue to target shipping lanes in the Red Sea.

The Houthi rebels have been launching attacks on US Navy and merchant vessels in the region, and two US navy pilots were shot down over the Red Sea on Sunday. The incident occurred amid an uptick in attacks between the Houthis and the Israeli military this week.

In recent days, Israel has bombed targets in Yemen, including power stations near Sanaa, which killed at least nine people. The Israeli bombardment followed a missile launch by the Houthi rebels towards Tel Aviv.

The US and UK have been carrying out airstrikes against Houthi targets in response to Red Sea assaults. The Biden administration has also imposed sanctions on the group, including the governor of the central bank in Sanaa and several officials.
