A passenger’s carry-on bag was found to contain 82 consumer-grade fireworks, three knives, two replica firearms, and one canister of pepper spray at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on Sunday. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) described the incident as “concerning” due to the sheer number of prohibited items discovered in a single bag.
The bag belonged to a woman heading to Philadelphia, according to TSA officials. LAX police interviewed her but released no further information. The department’s bomb squad confiscated the fireworks.
The TSA issued a reminder to travelers about the dangers of carrying fireworks and replica firearms on flights. Fireworks are never allowed in carry-on or checked luggage, while knives and replica firearms should be placed in checked baggage. However, some airlines do not allow pepper spray, so passengers are advised to check with their airline before traveling.
The TSA’s Director, Jason Pantages, expressed concern about the incident, citing the busy holiday travel season as a reason for increased vigilance. He warned travelers to double-check the contents of their bags before arriving at the airport to avoid similar discoveries.
