Aaron Pierre Takes on the Throne as Mufasa in ‘The Lion King’

Aaron Pierre is ready to roar onto the scene as the voice of young Mufasa in Disney’s prequel “Mufasa: The Lion King.” The 30-year-old actor, who previously appeared in “The Underground Railroad” series and M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller “Old,” has been working towards this breakout role for years.

Pierre recalls his early days as a high school student, narrating a production of “Moby-Dick” where he realized he wanted to be a professional actor. However, it took him time to develop his smooth baritone voice, which he now boasts in the title role. Pierre says his journey is about understanding the complexities of Mufasa’s character and how he evolved into a great leader despite facing hardships.

The actor also shared that singing Disney tunes was a new experience for him, but he enjoyed belting out Lin-Manuel Miranda’s new “Lion King” songs. Pierre credits his love for jazz and vinyl records to help him develop his vocal skills. He is set to appear in upcoming projects such as HBO’s “Lanterns,” a DC superhero sci-fi drama, where he plays the role of John Stewart.

Pierre believes playing Mufasa is an honor, especially given the character’s significance as one of Disney’s first Black superheroes. With his powerful voice and dedication to his craft, Pierre is poised to bring a new level of depth to the iconic role.
