A deadly bus crash occurred on a highway in Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil, early Saturday, claiming 38 lives. The accident involved a passenger bus and a truck, with witnesses saying the bus lost control after hitting a granite block or blowing out a tire.
The victim toll includes those killed at the scene and 13 taken to hospitals nearby. A car with three passengers also collided with the bus but all on board survived.
Governor Romeu Zema has mobilized state authorities to assist victims’ families, while President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed his condolences and prayers for those affected. This tragedy is part of a larger safety concern in Brazil, where over 10,000 people died in traffic accidents in 2024 alone.
The incident is the latest in a series of fatal bus crashes in Brazil this year, with another accident involving a football team’s bus killing three people in September.
