The Detroit Lions bounced back from a week’s worth of talk about their recent defeat to Buffalo with a convincing 34-17 victory over division foe Chicago on Sunday afternoon. Quarterback Jared Goff led the charge, throwing for 336 yards and three touchdowns as the Lions’ offense set a new franchise record with 493 points on the season.
The Lions got off to a strong start, scoring a field goal on their first possession after forcing a 3-and-out on Chicago’s drive. From there, they never looked back, scoring touchdowns on seven of their next eight possessions. The defense also played well, forcing two fumbles and recovering one to give the ball back to the offense.
Goff was terrific, completing 23 of 32 passes for three touchdowns and a passer rating of 137.0. He set a new single-season career record with his 33rd passing touchdown. The Lions’ offense also set a franchise record with 493 points on the season, improving to 13-2 in the NFC North and playoff standings.
The game was far from over until the end of the half, however. With just 19 seconds left, Chicago scored on a 45-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 27-14. But Detroit responded with a drive capped off by a 21-yard touchdown pass from Goff to tight end Sam LaPorta, pushing the lead back up to 20 points.
Chicago added a field goal in the third quarter to make it 34-17, but it was too little, too late. The Lions held on for the win, improving their playoff chances in the process.
