Disney’s live-action prequel “Mufasa” has failed to match expectations, earning just $122 million globally despite initial projections of $180 million. The film, directed by Barry Jenkins and featuring music from Lin-Manuel Miranda, opened in China with $7.8 million and France with $7.7 million. The movie’s poor performance has raised concerns about the cost of its production, with estimates suggesting a price tag above $200 million.
In contrast, Disney’s other recent releases are performing well. “Moana 2” continued to attract audiences, adding $32.8 million from 52 territories over the weekend and reaching $790.2 million globally. The sequel was originally commissioned for streaming but has become a surprise hit on the big screen.
Other notable releases include Paramount’s “Wicked”, which has generated $571 million worldwide despite starting with a modest $12.6 million from 81 markets, and Universal’s “Gladiator II”, which has earned $416 million globally after spending over $250 million in production.
