OpenAI Whistleblower Suchir Balaji Dies by Suicide at 26

Suchir Balaji, a 26-year-old former researcher at OpenAI, has died by suicide, according to the San Francisco Medical Examiner’s Office. The body was found in his California apartment on November 26.

Balaji had become a whistleblower against OpenAI in recent months, speaking publicly about the company’s practices and questioning their legality. He alleged that OpenAI had violated US copyright law while developing ChatGPT, which he helped build during his time with the company.

The family of Balaji is seeking answers about his death and described him as “happy, smart, and brave.” A spokesperson for OpenAI said they are devastated by the news and their hearts go out to Balaji’s loved ones.

OpenAI faces a group of lawsuits from various news publishers and individuals accusing them of using intellectual property without permission. The company is also facing a lawsuit from Elon Musk, who claims that its conversion to a for-profit company is “illegal.”

Balaji’s death comes as the company is facing increased scrutiny over its practices and treatment of employees. The family plans a memorial for him later this month in California.
