The Philadelphia 76ers overcame a chaotic first half to beat the San Antonio Spurs 111-106 on Monday night. Joel Embiid, who was ejected from the game after arguing with officials twice, still managed to contribute nine points and three rebounds in just 14 minutes.
The ejections of Embiid and teammate Andre Drummond were both sparked by altercations under the basket. Drummond was initially called for a technical foul before it was rescinded after video review, while Embiid’s ejection was due to arguing with referee Jenna Schroeder about a charging call. However, officials later stated that there was “incidental contact” between Embiid and Schroeder, but no further punishment was warranted.
Despite the controversy, the 76ers were able to complete the comeback led by Tyrese Maxey’s 32 points and crucial plays in the final minute. The Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama finished with 26 points, nine rebounds, and eight blocks, but his performance was overshadowed by the intense reaction from Philadelphia fans towards him.
Embiid did not address the incident after the game, according to a team official. The 76ers are looking to build on this win as they continue their season, while the Spurs will try to regroup without Gregg Popovich, who is recovering from a stroke.
