The season two finale of Apple+ series “Bad Sisters” brings closure to the complex storylines of its characters. Creator Sharon Horgan’s idea for the show was inspired by her own thoughts on women who have been through abusive relationships, and how they often end up in unhealthy situations.
The final episodes reveal that Ian Reilly, Grace’s ex-husband, is indeed a conman and corrupt former police officer. He had initially blackmailed Grace over her secret to get money from her daughter Blainaid. However, the sisters confront him, and he eventually meets his demise after being hit by Angelica.
Angelica, played by Fiona Shaw, was initially set up as the villain but is revealed to be a victim of the Garvey sisters’ cruelty. She was befriended by Eva, who didn’t want her friendship, leading to her tragic situation.
The season highlights the flaws in the police system, which protected Reilly’s bad behavior. Detective Inspector Fergal Loftus had questionable tactics during his investigation of the sisters, and it was eventually revealed that he was corrupt.
In the end, the sisters are able to escape justice due to police corruption. However, they still face emotional repercussions from losing Grace. The creator suggests that a third season might be tricky given the current setup, but is open to exploring more storylines in the future.
The series’ ability to make viewers believe its characters’ situations is what makes it work. Horgan believes that there are many more dark stories like theirs, and she’s always thinking about where to take the show next.
