“Glacier Archaeologists Uncover Ancient Scaring Stick Flags in Norway’s Breheimen National Park”

Secrets of the Ice, a glacier archaeology program, has made two significant discoveries in Norway’s Innlandet and Vestland counties. In Breheimen National Park, researchers found two ancient scaring stick flags, one complete and one broken, which have been preserved in ice for about 1,500 years. These flags were used by hunters to guide reindeer herds for hunting. The sticks would serve as a moving barrier, steering the reindeer towards hunters lying in wait.

The team discovered distinct parallel lines along the length of the Breheimen flag, which are actually year rings from radially split pine used to make it. This find follows the discovery of a Viking-era arrowhead in the Jotunheimen Mountains earlier this year. The program has previously uncovered various hunting-related objects and domestic items like a woven Viking mitten, a 3,400-year-old hide shoe, and complete Iron Age tunics.
