Volunteers at First Parish Church in Augusta, Maine, worked tirelessly to ensure their community had a hot meal this Christmas. The church’s tradition of serving meals dates back over 30 years, as founded by Keith Priest.
Priest started the tradition after his children waited all day for him to return from cooking the meal. This year, volunteers delivered 300 meals and handed out hundreds more. Despite rising food insecurity in Maine, with a 47% increase in food-insecure Mainers from 2021 to 2024, the church continued its efforts.
The event drew large crowds, with people lining up as early as 6 a.m. Gary McAllister, who picked up five meals, said some attendees were homeless or struggling financially. Volunteers like Sarah Praul emphasized the impact of their work on individuals’ lives. One man, Islam Karim, even returned to drop off his friend, inspired by the volunteer’s kindness.
The church’s mission serves as a reminder of the “season of giving” and its importance in providing for those in need.
