A power cable linking Finland and Estonia has broken down, with sabotage fears raised in the Baltic region. The EstLink 2 cable cut its current on Wednesday, according to Finnish officials.
Finland’s Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said the outage had not affected the country’s electricity supplies, but authorities remain vigilant. Sabotage is a possibility, Arto Pahkin, head of operations at Finland’s power grid Fingrid, told public broadcaster Yle.
The incident follows similar cable cuts in the region, including two telecoms cables between Sweden and Denmark last month. The Chinese ship Yi Peng 3 was tracked to sail over these cables around the time they were cut.
European officials suspect sabotage may be linked to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. However, China has denied involvement. Russia’s Kremlin dismisses these claims as “absurd” and “laughable”.
