Santa Barbara County Reports Two H5 Bird Flu Cases in Cats

The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department has confirmed two cases of H5 bird flu in domesticated cats from different households. The infected cats developed severe neurological illness and died due to the virus. While there is no evidence of local transmission, people who come into contact with wild birds and infected animals have a higher risk of exposure.

Cats can be exposed to H5 bird flu by consuming infected birds or contaminated environments, and may develop severe illness that includes fever and neurologic symptoms. However, there have been no known cases of transmission from cats to humans in this nationwide outbreak.

To reduce the risk, the following best practices are recommended:

– Avoid raw dairy and undercooked meat products
– Limit contact with sick animals
– Report sick or dead birds
– Protect pets or poultry
– Get a seasonal flu vaccine

Additionally, veterinary practitioners should follow CDC guidelines for safe handling of infected cats. For any questions or concerns, call the Santa Barbara Public Health Department’s 24/7 disease control hotline at 805-681-5280.
