Russia Launches Christmas Day Missile Barrage on Ukraine’s Energy Infrastructure

Russia launched a massive missile and drone attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure on Christmas Day, striking a thermal power plant and prompting widespread power outages across the country.

According to Ukrainian officials, over 70 rockets, including ballistic missiles, and over 100 attack drones were used in the attack. At least 50 missiles were shot down by Ukrainian forces, while others struck critical targets such as Kharkiv, Dnipro, and Poltava regions.

Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko said Russia continues to target Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, with at least seven strikes reported in Kharkiv alone. The attacks have caused significant disruptions to electricity supply across the country.

The attack on Ukraine’s power grid is the 13th this year, with DTEK, the largest private energy company, stating that one of their thermal power plants was targeted by Russia. Ukrainian state energy operator Ukrenergo applied preemptive power outages across the country due to the attack.

Local authorities reported at least three injuries in Kharkiv, while regional head Oleh Syniehubov said the city was under “massive missile fire”. The situation remains dire, with reports of fires and ongoing ballistic missile threats.
