Eating Fruit Can Halve Your Risk of Dying Early, Says Study

Eating two types of fruit four times a week can significantly reduce the risk of dying early, according to scientists. A study published in the Frontiers in Nutrition journal found that consuming apples and bananas regularly can lower the risk of heart disease and premature death.

Researchers examined 2,184 men and women with high cholesterol over 10 years and discovered that those who ate apples three to four times a week were less likely to die early. The study concluded that eating both apples and bananas had a similar effect on mortality.

The researchers also found that eating fruit can help reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, obesity, and improve mental health. They recommend the Mediterranean diet, which has been shown to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s.

The NHS recommends consuming at least five portions of fruit and vegetables daily, with each portion being around 80g. The World Health Organization suggests eating 400g of fruit and veg daily to reduce health problems like heart disease, strokes, and certain cancers.
