Syrian factions have agreed to disband their separate forces and form a new national army under the Ministry of Defence. This move aims to unify the country’s armed groups, bringing an end to years of infighting and fragmentation. The main armed groups involved include Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), Ahrar al-Sham, and the Free Syrian Army (FSA). However, one major player is noticeably absent from the deal: the Islamic State group, also known as ISIS.
ISIS’s exclusion was reportedly due to its terrorist designation by multiple countries. Despite this, the new national army aims to create a more inclusive and cohesive force capable of addressing Syria’s pressing security challenges.
