SSI payments in the US will be processed earlier than usual this month due to a change in collection method. The check for January 2025, including the new Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA), will be paid out on December 31st to those who have Direct Deposit activated and their checks accepted in advance.
However, not all SSI recipients will receive their payment on time. Those without Direct Deposit will receive their money about three days later. The maximum monthly SSI benefit increased from $943 to $967 in 2025, providing an extra $1,000 per month for eligible citizens with disabilities or those over 65 years old.
To qualify for the maximum SSI benefit, applicants must have a disability, be over 65, and meet low income and resource requirements. The payment amount will depend on individual income, with higher incomes resulting in lower monthly payments. Despite the delay, all eligible Americans can expect to receive their SSI check by the first week of January 2025.
