Meta Quest HDMI Link Brings Console and PC Streaming to VR Headsets

Meta has released a new app called Meta Quest HDMI Link that allows users to repurpose their Quest 3, 2, and Pro headsets as a screen for consoles, laptops, or any device with video out capabilities. To use the app, you’ll need additional hardware in the form of a USB Video Class (UVC) and USB Audio Class (UAC) compatible 1080p capture card.

These small capture cards can cost less than $20 and typically feature an HDMI port on one end and a USB-A or USB-C connection on the other. Some models also include an extra port for powering the Quest headset while it’s connected.

Once installed, the Meta Quest HDMI Link app allows you to connect your video source device (such as a console or laptop) to the capture card’s input using the necessary cable. Then, simply connect the dongle directly to the headset and grant the necessary permissions when prompted.

After setup, you’ll be able to view video from your connected device with near-zero latency on a floating resizable screen. The app is limited to 1080p at 60fps resolution, but it provides a big-screen experience without a projector or allows you to position the video feed in a smaller window alongside other apps.

The Meta Quest HDMI Link app offers an easy way to bring this functionality to existing hardware, and future versions of the Quest headset could potentially include similar built-in features by supporting standards like DisplayPort over USB-C.
