Hwang Dong-hyuk on ‘Squid Game’ and Future Projects, Including Jake Gyllenhaal Collaboration

Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator and writer-director of Netflix’s “Squid Game,” has expressed happiness seeing his characters meet their demise on screen. The show, which premiered in 2021, follows a secret competition in South Korea that targets people in debt, with the winner receiving a large cash prize – but losing means certain death.

For Hwang, who originally conceived of the show as a two-hour film 15 years ago, it was a massive undertaking to manage the large cast. However, he has said it was worth it, given the show’s success and the opportunity to explore themes relevant to today’s society.

Hwang attributes his success to not giving up on his passion project. He also revealed that he is working on two new projects: a feature film set 10-20 years in the future, which will be darker and more sinister than “Squid Game,” as well as another collaboration with Hollywood actor Jake Gyllenhaal.

In an interview with the AP, Hwang discussed his learning experience from creating “Squid Game” and his plans for future projects. When asked about working with international talent, he expressed his desire to collaborate with actors like Gyllenhaal, who he has admired in previous films.

Hwang’s vision for “Squid Game” was influenced by the changing world and the struggles of young people in South Korea today. The show’s success has led to a new season, which premiered on Thursday, featuring more characters than the first installment.

The creator has also stated that he is looking forward to working with Gyllenhaal, although no details have been revealed about their future collaboration.
