Google Unveils Key AI Advances for 2024

Google has been investing in machine learning and AI research for over 20 years, resulting in numerous updates across various AI models and consumer products. In December, the company announced several significant advancements in its AI capabilities.

The “agentic era” of AI has officially begun, with Google releasing Gemini 2.0, its most capable model yet. This agentic model can understand more about its environment and take action on behalf of users. Other experimental models, including Gemi-Exp-1206 and Gemini Advanced, have also been introduced for developers to explore.

Google also released new AI video and image generation models, Veo 2 and Imagen 3. These models achieved state-of-the-art results in head-to-head comparisons, with Veo 2 demonstrating improved understanding of real-world physics.

Furthermore, Google upgraded its NotebookLM technology, including a new look and features such as the ability to “join” Audio Overviews with hosts. The company also introduced AI-powered features for Android and Pixel devices, including easier photo navigation and sharing.

In addition, Google shared five AI trends for businesses in 2025, highlighting improvements in enterprise security, searches, and customer experiences. The company also launched a new space for AI agents in Google Cloud, called Agentspace, which aims to increase productivity by bringing together AI agents, Gemini’s advanced reasoning, and enterprise data.

Other notable announcements include the launch of GenCast, an open-source AI weather model that improves predictions up to 15 days ahead. Additionally, Google unveiled Willow, a state-of-the-art quantum chip that has reached a major milestone in quantum computing research.

These advancements demonstrate Google’s continued commitment to advancing AI capabilities and exploring its applications across various fields.
