Miami University has announced that men’s basketball coach Jim Larranaga is stepping down from the position. The 75-year-old took over as head coach in 2011 and led the team to six NCAA tournaments and four Sweet 16 appearances, including a Final Four run in 2023.
Veteran assistant Bill Courtney will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Larranaga cited his age and desire to spend more time with family as reasons for his departure.
Larranaga’s tenure has seen mixed results, with a 11-6 record in NCAA tournament games during his time at Miami. The team has struggled since its successful 2022-23 season, entering this year ranked 13th in the preseason AP poll but missing the postseason entirely after going 15-17.
Larranaga’s coaching career spans over 50 years and includes stints at George Mason, Bowling Green, Davidson, and Virginia. He becomes the sixth longtime ACC coach to step down since April 2021.
