Whooping cough cases in the US have reached their highest level in over a decade, with over 32,000 reported cases this year. This represents a six-fold increase compared to last year’s numbers. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has warned that whooping cough can be severe across all age groups, but particularly affects young children under one year old. Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent the highly contagious respiratory illness, which shares symptoms with the common cold but is characterized by a persistent, painful cough that can last for weeks or months.
