A former engineer at OpenAI, Suchir Balaji, who was found dead recently, had been a key contributor to the development of ChatGPT. However, he left the company over concerns about copyright infringement. Balaji worked at OpenAI for nearly four years before leaving to organize datasets for the fourth-generation language model GPT-4.
As he delved deeper into his work, Balaji began questioning the ethics of using people’s data to train AI systems that then compete with them in the marketplace. He first raised these concerns with The New York Times in October and later told the Associated Press that he planned to testify in copyright infringement cases against OpenAI.
Balaji expressed his reservations about training on people’s data, stating, “It doesn’t feel right to be training on people’s data and then competing with them in the marketplace.” He also published a personal blog post detailing his concerns. The extent of his revelations’ impact on any future legal cases is unclear due to his untimely death.
