Vast Space Plans First Commercial Space Station Deployment

The International Space Station (ISS), currently occupied by humans since 2000, is set to be decommissioned within seven years. To replace it, NASA is encouraging private companies to develop their own space stations for deployment.

One such company, California-based Vast Space, aims to deploy its Haven-1 module, the first commercial space station designed for near-Earth orbit. The project hopes to secure a bid in NASA’s Commercial Low-Earth Orbit Destination (CLD) Phase II program, which will select at least two providers by 2026.

Vast Space envisions a more complex Haven-2 facility that could be completed by 2032. Designed with international cooperation in mind, the station would allow seamless integration of partners from around the world, fostering scientific and technological advancements. Other companies, including Blue Origin, Sierra Space, Boeing, Redwire, Voyager Space, Nanoracks, Airbus Defense and Space, and Axiom Space, are also vying to join the CLD program.

Vast Space plans to make significant progress in the next 12 months by becoming the first company to deploy a commercial space station in near-Earth orbit.
