Blake Horvath set a Navy record with a 95-yard touchdown run and led the Midshipmen to a 21-20 victory over Oklahoma in the Armed Forces Bowl on Friday. The win marked Navy’s sixth 10-win season, their last one dating back to 2019.
Trailing 14-0 early in the game, Horvath tied the score with his record-breaking run late in the third quarter. He then scored a go-ahead 6-yard touchdown run with 4:34 left to put Navy ahead for good. The Sooners had a chance to win on a two-point conversion attempt, but Justin Reed sacked quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr., securing the victory.
Navy’s coach Brian Newberry said the win was a perfect ending to a season marked by adversity and growth. “It symbolizes everything that these guys have been through,” he said. The Midshipmen will return Horvath and other key players next season.
The Sooners finished their first season in the Southeastern Conference with a 6-7 record, one game shy of a bowl win. Despite injuries to several players, including standout linebacker Danny Stutsman, Oklahoma showed growth throughout the season. The team will open their fourth season at home on August 30 against Illinois State.
