Apple has removed three models of iPhones with a Lightning connector from sale in 29 countries, including the UK. The move comes into effect on December 28, 2024, due to an EU directive requiring all devices to use USB-C charging ports.
The EU aims to reduce electronic waste by standardizing charging ports across devices such as phones, cameras, and tablets. Apple previously resisted this requirement but eventually adopted USB-C with the release of iPhone 15 models.
As a result, only newer iPhone models with USB-C connectors are available for purchase in affected countries. However, third-party resellers can still sell remaining stocks of older models, making it possible to purchase an iPhone 14 in some regions, such as Spain.
The ban also applies to Switzerland and Northern Ireland, which has separate trading rules to prevent a border between the Republic of Ireland and Great Britain. While the impact on other countries is expected to be minimal, it may take time for legislation to be implemented and take effect before the iPhone 14 is retired this fall.
