Nine Arrested as Cocaine and Cannabis Smuggled from Spain to Manchester via Frozen Broccoli

Nine people have been arrested in the UK after Spanish police discovered cocaine and cannabis being smuggled into the country through boxes of frozen broccoli, sent from Guadalajara, 40 miles north-east of Madrid. The operation, codenamed Operation Balandro, involved both Spanish and UK authorities over two years.

Seized amounts include 2,455 kilos of cannabis, 187 kilos of cocaine, and cash worth 590 euros. The gang used a fruit and veg import-export firm as a front to ship the narcotics into the UK. Police uncovered the operation by monitoring suspicious activities and identifying key members of the group.

One of the ‘heads’ of the gang traveled to Manchester to coordinate the shipment of three pallets containing the frozen broccoli, which were found to contain blocks of cannabis labeled Banana Kush. The investigation remains open, with further arrests possible.
